On June 8, 2020, Founder and CEO of Goalbook, Daniel Jhin Yoo, made a public commitment to take anti-racist action as a company. Part of that commitment was allowing employees to donate to organizations that further black social justice causes. Every employee was able to donate $249 to an organization of their choice. Below you can learn about several organizations that Goalbook team members chose to support.
Black Voters Matter

Black Voters Matter increases awareness to increase civic engagement, advocates for voting rights, and educates black voters on effective voting. As an African American woman, at times I’ve felt frustrated, overwhelmed, and even angered by the climate of our country. There have been times when I’ve wondered, “What can I do?” It’s then that I remember the words of John Lewis. “The vote is precious. It is almost sacred. It is the most powerful non-violent tool we have in a democracy.” This reminder helps refocus my frustration into practice. Black Voters Matter is taking the steps to equip black voters to make our voices heard. .

Farms to Grow

Farms to Grow is based in Oakland and their organization assists African American farmers and other underserved communities of farmers/gardeners. They do this by helping them maintain and create sustainable farms and spaces to grow food and to motivate the next generation of farmers to grow sustainably, with the community in mind. As a farmer myself who worked in the food sustainability system for many years now, this organization is close to my heart. As a mother of young African American children, I also want to promote generational farming and this organization holds generations of farming practices in their core mission.

NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund

The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. is fighting for racial justice through litigation, advocacy, and public education. As an education professional, I think public education is a hallmark in lasting change and I believe in their three-prong approach. Additionally, they work hard to ensure that every student of color has access to a safe, inclusive, and high-quality education, which aligns with our mission here at Goalbook.

Melville Family Foundation

My friend from high school, Sterling Melville, is the president of the Melville Family Foundation. He is a great human being and continues to impact the lives of black and brown students in our hometown. The organization is providing food, security, economic stability, and academic support for black and brown students in the DFW metroplex.

Black Women’s Health Imperative

Black women in the United States experience poor medical and maternal health outcomes, including disproportionately high rates of death related to pregnancy. According to national statistics, black women are three to four times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related death as compared to white women. This is an issue all too familiar to me as I have experienced the loss of a close friend from a pregnancy-related death and experienced my own pregnancy-related complications this year with my daughter.
Organizations like the Black Women’s Health Imperative are committed to advance the health and wellness of black women and continue the fight against racial inequality in healthcare by shedding light on these inequities through their campaigns, events, business partnerships, and community forums.
